Tankless or Thankless

on Sat, 03/03/2012 - 22:03

Tankless water heaters are becoming the best thing according to some. Be careful when making this decision. Most sales people will sell you a tankless water heater without asking you about your existing electrical service or recommending you consult with your Fort Lauderdale electrician.

The average water heater requires a 30 amp service at 4,500 watts. A #10 wire is used to accomodate the appliance. In order to satisfy the needs of the average shower or multiple showers, you must install a tankless water heater which might require a 60, 70, or 80 amp service. This circuit would need up to a #4 wire to accomodate the appliance. An unknowing person would have the plumber remove the existing water heater and install a tankless water heater. The plumber would then inform you that you need a Fort Lauderdale electrician to upgrade the circuit which would cost you hundreds of dollars, if the upgrade is even possible.

In most condominium apartments, it is next to impossible to upgrade the electrical circuit due to the lack of accessibility or lack of electrical service available to the apartment. Always consult with a Fort Lauderdale electrician before you add or modify appliances in your home. I am here to help.
