Replacing Zinsco and FPE Circuit Breaker Panels

on Tue, 06/05/2012 - 15:53

Replacing the old fuse systems, circuit breakers have become the common over current protection devices in our homes and businesses. Two manufacturers - Zinsco and Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) are no longer manufacturing circuit breakers and/or panels because of safety issues and home protection failures.

Some insurance companies have begun not insuring homes with these types of existing panels. I've had many phone calls from clients asking for a quote to replace these circuit breaker panels.

In response, here is a ball park idea of what replacing Zinsco and FPE circuit breaker panels can cost:

1) The cost to replace an interior main circuit breaker panel and circuit breakers can range from $800 to $1,600 depending on the level of difficulty and number of circuits.

2) The cost to replace an exterior main circuit breaker panel and circuit breakers can range from $1,600 to $2,500 depending on the level of difficulty and the need to upgrade to today's electrical codes.

Although the trend of insurance companies is to mandate replacing these electrical circuit breaker panels, electrical inspectors are not 100% on board yet mandating their replacement. However if you ask for their opinion, you can be sure they will agree with replacing Zinsco and FPE panels.

Here is an interesting link to learn more about the safety issues with Zinsco and FPE panels:
